NIWA
A Japanese garden detail with stone lantern, moss, and stepping stones

Tsuboniwa / Kyoto City, Kyoto, Japan / Spring

A tsuboniwa courtyard that gathers light inside a machiya

The design used stone, a water basin, and low evergreen planting to create depth within a narrow courtyard.

Client request

A renovated machiya needed a small courtyard garden visible from guest rooms, with simple maintenance.

Craft note

In a small garden, what is left empty matters most. The composition lets the eye rest diagonally rather than only at the center.
